“A Flour by any other Name…..”

Sadly – but, in many cases, inevitably – marriages don’t run as smoothly as we would want.

Part of a minister’s work can involve pastoral counselling with a couple – whether individually or together – to attempt to sort things out.

Once I had a chat with “John” who felt that his wife “Mary” was becoming estranged from him.

At one point, we talked about communication.  I said something along the lines of  “It is essential that husbands and wives know each other’s likes and dislikes.”

And continued, “Can you name your wife’s favourite flower?”

John thought for a moment, scratched his head and eventually answered, “I don’t go into the kitchen much… that’s her ‘territory’….  but it’s either Homepride or McDougalls”
